York St John Arts students showcase their talents

Create is an annual event from York St John University that gives students the opportunity to exhibit their work and showcase their talents to the public.

Create 14, showcases programmes from across the university’s Faculty of Arts and events will include dance recitals, fine art exhibitions, literature and history showcases, theatre performances.

Dr Fiona Thompson, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, said: “The sheer wealth of talent, the breadth and depth of achievement, the passion, the energy, the emotion, the creativity is awe-inspiring.

“I acknowledge and respect the dedication our students have to their ‘art’, whatever form that takes, that enables them to push boundaries and find their own voices, supported by creative academics, technicians and administrative support.”

Highlights include 12 different theatre performances, with one about love, remorse and loss produced by students who engaged with women at HMP Askham Grange. Dance performances will make their way through some of York’s sites and there will be an exhibition of Fine Arts.

Audiences can also enjoy a series of music concerts, culminating with a final performance at the Guildhall. While History students will highlight the stories behind a selection of objects from the York Castle Museum.
Create 14 will run in venues across the city, including Royal York Hotel, The Duchess and the Hospitium in the Museum Gardens, as well as at York St John’s campus, until 2 June.

Dr Thompson said: “Literally, there is something for everyone and our ambition is for each year’s Create festival to be bigger and more magical and to take us out of the campus and further into the city. This year’s looks as if it will live up to that ambition.”
